The Ministry of Prayer

Picture of Rev. Don ThurmanBro. Don Thurman

The Word of the Lord in Ezekiel 22:30,31 continues to bear strongly on my mind and heart as I think about our ministry of prayer.

The text reads “‘I looked for a man among them who would build up the wall; and stand before Me in the gap on behalf of the land so I would not have to destroy it, but I found none.  So I will pour out my wrath on them and consume them with My fiery anger, bringing down on their own heads all they have done,' declares the Sovereign Lord.”

The mystery of prayer suggested by this passage is this: Why would our all-powerful, all-knowing triune God include us, His finite creatures, in His great plan of redeeming rebellious man?  But this is exactly what He does as He reaches out in His love and compassion to save all men, and desires that not one be lost and perish eternally.

He calls us to “stand in the gap,” the gap between Him and rebellious man, that He might extend His mercy to each one. What a privilege and power our prayers of intercession will make as God's redeeming grace reaches out to lost and darkened mankind! And to think His grace will meet the need of mankind to be delivered from ALL sin, not only wrong and destructive deeds in thought, word and action, but also to be delivered from the cause and source of these manifestations — the carnal mind, and inherited sinfulness, which is the main problem of sin in our lives!

This makes the ministry of prayer even more significant than ever.  Let us as holiness people be the ones God is looking for, those who will stand in the gap and build that wall of His mercy around the lost and dying in our world today!

Your fellow Intercessor,

Don Thurman
