Jim Kerwin

Singing “The Comforter Abides With Me” is how the Monday evening service of the 2016 Iowa Holiness Association Camp Meeting started.  WGM's missionary in Japan, Zach Motts led the opening prayer and our founding President Rev. Isaiah Reid was back to give us more insight as how things were in the 1800's.  Tonight our Evangelist Rev. Del Rittgers looks to Genesis Chapter 26 verses 12-15 for more answers in a continuation of the question we looked into last night of “Why we are here?”

As in years past we open the 2016 Iowa Holiness Association Camp Meetings with the singing of “There is a Fountain”  followed by greeting and opening prayer by Iowa Holiness Association president Brady Hunter.  We also had a visit from IHA's Founding President Isaiah Reid as portrayed by Rev. Jim Kerwin. And then our evening message by our Evangelist Rev. Del Rittgers

Rev. Del Rittgers is a past IHA Board Member and was the camp Youth Evangelist for several years. He is currently the Pastor at the Buffalo Kentucky Church of the Nazarene

Doing What We Can

by Jim Kerwin on June 17, 2014

Picture of Rev. Jim Kerwin, M.A.Bro. Jim Kerwin

Isaiah Reid and I apologize that we couldn’t be at the camp meeting last week. I had just returned at the end of May from five weeks of ministry in Nicaragua and Guatemala. A short rest was in order before my upcoming Romania trip this summer. (Cut us a little slack; between the two of us, Isaiah and I are 240 years old!)

What to Do?

Where Brother Reid goes between camp meetings, I’m never quite certain, but while I was moping around a bit the week before camp (“How I wish I could go!”), something that Isaiah once said came back to give me encouragement and direction:

Dare to do something for God and holiness. If you cannot scale a mountain, climb a schoolhouse hill and open a meeting. If you cannot go “‘round the world,” go around to the holiness prayer meetings, or go to the holiness camp meetings. Go! Get a move on! Learn the art of “pushing things.”*

Ah, but what if I can’t even go to the camp meeting? Well, I knew I could pray daily for the meetings, so I did. And I knew we should pay our annual membership dues, which we will. (C’mon, brethren, it’s still only $5 per person per year! That’s less than one super triple-mocha-coffee-marketing-babble latte at Smokey Row or Starbucks.) But what could I “dare”? What could I “push”? And then it came to me…

What We Did

We’ve had an encouraging number of responses lately to holiness articles on our FinestOfTheWheat.org website, including requests from as far away as Budapest, Hungary; Coeur d’Alene, Idaho; and Berlin, Germany. Most of the requests have something to do with a need for guidance and prayer, as well as a desire for clear literature on the subject of obtaining the experience of entire sanctification. So…

…all last week during camp, I worked on a special project, namely, turning Isaiah Reid’s book The Holy Way into e-book format. Of course, we already make the contents freely available on our website; but e-book readers are gaining in popularity, and I have to admit that reading an e-book on my Nexus 7 is a lot easier than scrolling down through the text on a long web page. So for six straight days Denise and I edited, formatted, designed a cover, and “pushed” through the technical difficulties. (There are always technical difficulties!)

The fruit of our labors is that The Holy Way is now available as a Kindle book on Amazon.com and for Nook e-book readers at Barnes & Noble’s BN.com site.

What You Can Do

For the next three weeks or so, we’re going to keep the price at 99¢, before we raise it to its regular price of $2.99. But you needn’t buy it! We’d rather give you a copy, if you can help launch the book. How can you help? You Kindle and Nook owners, if you could you take an hour or so, read this short book, and then post a one-paragraph review of The Holy Way (on Amazon.com or BN.com, as appropriate), that will raise the book’s “visibility” online. Send us your Kindle- or Nook-related e-mail address, and through July 12, 2014 we’ll pay for a copy of the book, send you the link, and you can download it. In the e-mail, please tell us whether you need a Kindle or Nook edition.

I think you’ll discover, as we have, that this book is a concise, practical, what-it-is and how-to-get-it treatment of holiness. The Holy Way was consistently used of God for about thirty years (the first of its five editions came out in 1892), and I think that after you read it, you’ll agree that it has the same potential in the 21st century.

If you can’t give half a million dollars, give a dollar, or even a dime. If you cannot make a book, or a tract, you can, if you will, buy a hundred leaflets for ten cents and give them away.*

Roger that, Brother Reid! You wrote the book, we’ve published a new edition of it (fully annotated, with the addition of the full lyrics of each hymn quoted), and we’re giving it away for a few weeks.

Now, what’s the next thing you and I can “dare” for God and holiness?

Much love in Jesus,

Brother Jim Kerwin

*P.S.: Yes, as you’ve probably guessed by now, the quotes come from The Holy Way!

Effectual Fervent Prayer

Picture of Rev. Don ThurmanBro. Don Thurman

The “effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man avails much” (James 5:16).

Little can be accomplished in the work of the Kingdom of God without prayer. Much can be accomplished if we are faithful in calling upon our living Lord.

Praise Reports:

  • We praise the Lord for answering prayer for brother Tim Woodard, who is our newest member of the IHA Board and has been greatly afflicted but is now improving.
  • We are also glad to hear that board Member Larry Smith, has also survived a [click to continue…]

Blessing God for What He Has Done

Picture of Rev. Don ThurmanBro. Don Thurman

The Psalmist exhorts us to “Enter into His gates with thanksgiving and into His courts with praise; be thankful unto Him, and bless His name.  For the Lord is good; His mercy is everlasting; and His truth endures to all generations.” (Psalm 100:4,5)

How true these words are, and how appropriate as we reflect upon the Lord's blessing upon our wonderful Camp Meeting this summer!

  • Let us give Him thanks and praise for the wonderful attendance on the first night and the blessing of His presence in our midst throughout the week in every session.
  • Our children's meetings, under the ministry of the McKay family, challenged our children to know and serve the Lord in our blessed land, as children do in less fortunate circumstances than we have in our land of the free.
  • We also give thanks for [click to continue…]

On Monday evening of the 2013 Iowa Holiness Association Camp Meetings our founding President Isaiah Reid told us about Harry May one of the roughest people he had ever met and the importance of not just forgiving but the need to sometimes forget.

Our founding President Rev. Isaiah Reid is portrayed by Bro. Jim Kerwin who comes to us all the way from Chesapeake, Virginia.

Here are the first two videos from the 2013 Iowa Holiness Association Camp Meetings. These are from the Sunday evening service.

The first video is another message from our founding president Isaiah Reid as portrayed by Bro. Jim Kerwin who completed his master’s thesis at Regent University’s School of Divinity in Virginia Beach, Virginia.  Bro. Jim completed his thesis, Isaiah Reid: His Life, Leadership, and Influence in the American Holiness Movement in 2006.

The second video is this years Evangelist Rev. Dr. Gary Henecke a graduate of what is now Olivet Nazarene University, Gary went on to earn his master's of arts and doctor of divinity degree from Western Evangelical Seminary.

Central Florida District Superintendent Larry Dennis called Gary “one of the leading communicators of our day,” saying “He is an incredible preacher, teacher, writer, and pastor.”

Check back often as we post more videos from the 2013 Iowa Holiness Association Camp Meetings

Friday evening Isaiah Reid spoke about the ripening of the fruit and its connection to sanctification.

Thanks to Jim Kerwin for his portrayal of IHA founding President Isaiah Reid at the 2012 Camp Meetings.

Thursday evening Isaiah Reid talks to us about a tavern, temptation, being a volunteer Fireman and keeping a pure heart and mind.

As our 2013 IHA Camp Meeting quickly approaches (June 9-14—only 35 days away!), let us give ourselves to concentrated prayer each day for the Camp during this month of May. Let us set each Tuesday noon as a special time of prayer and fasting as the Lord leads us. Let us remember each worker:

  • President Brady Hunter
  • Evangelist Gary Henecke
  • Worship leader Larry Dodds
  • Accompanist Rosemary Smith
  • Children’s workers Cyril and Jan McKay
  • The youth committee, including missionaries Steve and Kelly Solheim, who will provide the devotional messages for the youth

Latest Call to Prayer

by Jim Kerwin April 3, 2013

Pray for One Another Bro. Don Thurman I am reminded of James 5:16 which reads in part  “…Pray one for another…The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man avails much.”  This is one of several places in the Word we are exhorted to pray for one another.  Let us also begin to spend special time as […]
